AI demo agent vs chatbot vs interactive demo

Four terms that get used for overlapping things. Here is what a demo builder, an interactive demo, a website chatbot and an AI demo agent each do, and which problem each one fixes.

The short answer

A demo builder is a tool for making demos. An interactive demo is something a builder makes: a fixed experience the visitor clicks through. A chatbot answers questions in text. An AI demo agent does the part the other three leave out: it finds out what the visitor needs, shows them the relevant part of the product, answers their questions along the way, and tells sales what happened.

The lines are blurring. Some demo builders now add agents of their own, and some chatbots can link to a tour. Judge a product by what it does for the visitor, not by the category it uses for itself.

AI demo agent
What it is
Software for creating demos: capture a product flow, edit it, publish it.
A fixed, clickable experience of the product.
A text assistant that answers questions, usually from help or marketing content.
An agent that talks to the visitor and shows the product at the same time.
Who it serves
The person building the demo.
The visitor, who explores on their own.
The visitor with a question.
The visitor and the sales team that follows up.
What the visitor does
Whatever the builder produced: a video, a click-through, a guided tour.
Clicks through a path someone laid out.
Types a question and reads the answer.
Says what they are trying to do, then sees the part of the product that matters.
How it handles a particular visitor
Does not. It makes the artifact; the artifact is the same for everyone.
Not unless a separate version was built per segment.
Can answer the question asked, but does not show the product.
Yes. It asks first, then chooses what to show and answers questions as they arise.
What sales gets
Usually view counts and completion. Depends on the tool.
Engagement data: what was clicked, how far they got.
A transcript, and sometimes an email address.
What they asked, what they explored, and the points of high intent.
What it costs to keep running
Rebuilding or re-recording whenever the product changes.
Keeping the captured screens current as the product drifts.
Keeping the content it answers from accurate.
Keeping the underlying product knowledge accurate; no re-recording per segment.

Which one fixes which problem

Where each one is the right choice

None of these is the best one in general. Each fixes a specific problem and is wasted on the others.

  • A demo builderYou need a polished, fixed tour for a launch, a sales deck or a help page, and the person making it is on your team.
  • An interactive demoVisitors do not know what the product looks like, and a self-paced walkthrough at the right place on the page would answer it.
  • A website chatbotThe questions are factual and answerable from content you already have: pricing, integrations, policy.
  • An AI demo agentVisitors have questions the page cannot answer and the product needs to be seen, or sales spends first calls on basics, or leads arrive with no context.

FAQ

AI demo agent vs the alternatives, answered

A chatbot answers questions in text, usually from your help content, and the visitor goes elsewhere to see the product. An AI demo agent also shows the product: it asks what the visitor is trying to do, takes them through the relevant workflow, answers questions as they come up, and passes what it learned to sales.

No. An interactive demo is a fixed experience the visitor clicks through, the same for everyone and silent about anything it did not anticipate. An AI demo agent decides what to show based on the visitor, and it can answer an unscripted question. The two combine well, since a demo agent can use an interactive demo as what it shows.

No. A demo builder is software for creating demos: you capture screens or a product flow, edit them and publish the result. It serves the person building the demo. An AI demo agent serves the person watching it. It runs the buyer-facing conversation. The two are different jobs, although the categories are converging and some builders now add agents.

It depends on what the agent shows. If you want a polished, fixed tour in addition to a conversation, a builder produces that. If the agent can walk visitors through your product directly, you may not need one. Decide by whether a fixed tour is something your buyers actually ask for.

Start from your problem. If visitors leave with a question the page cannot answer, start with a chatbot or a demo agent. If visitors do not understand what the product looks like, a recorded walkthrough or interactive demo is the cheapest fix. If sales spends first calls on basics, or leads arrive with no context, a demo agent addresses both.

Ask it something a visitor would ask, then see whether it answers, shows you the product, or both.
